A Speech about My Hometown
My lovely hometown is located on the south shore of an islandIt's a small town with only about 9000 people and an area of about 38 square miles
FirstI want to talk about the people in the neighborhoodGenerally speakingpeople are very nice hereespecially in summerI feel that in summer everyone is in a great moodand very generousFor exampleone summer afternoonI was at the gas station filling up my car and was short of moneyGenerously an old gentleman gave me the money to pay the gas attendantThat's the type of people you can expect from my hometown
The greatest part about the townin my opinionis the locationThe Great Bay is five minutes away from my house and it's fantasticAnother great thing is how close everybody lives to each otherWith it being such a small townall my friends live five minutes awaywhich is a great advantage to me and everyone elseLastlythe nightlife is greatOn any Saturday night every bar is packed with peopleso there's always something going on
So far I've explained the good side of my hometownbut there are also some boring things about itIt is great in summerbut it is a different story in winterWhen winter comes aroundthe town turns into aghost townThis is because there is nowhere to goThe only thing we have is a shopping centerIt would be nice if we had a few more options to choose from

The first year of school in Americaknown as kindergartenusually begins between the ages of five and sixAmong rich countries such a late start is very strangePresident Obama believes it is an economic and social problemhis education secretary goes as far as to say that it ismorally wrongThis statement has some supportas it is clear from research into vocabulary that youngsters from poor families enter kindergarten well behind those from rich families—a disadvantage that usually lasts a lifetimeChildren from households on welfare knew 525 words by the age of threewhile the children of professionals had mastered 1116
Preschool can help close this gapSo in a speech last monthMrObama called for a partnership between the federal government and the states to expand it to every American childIt later became known thateverymeant those who come from families with incomes of up to 200above the poverty line—equal to an income of47000 for a family of four
Some critics say that sending children to school at the age of four does not workThe evidence suggests otherwiseFor exampleon March 20thnew results were announced from a study of 9 to 11 year olds in New JerseyThis report found that disadvantaged children who had attended preschool had better literacy(读写力)languagemaths and science skillsAnd two years of prekindergarten were better than one
Some studies also follow the effects of early learning over lifetimessuch as its effect on crime rates and other factors that may eventually burden societyCritics have singled out a government scheme called Head Startcreated in 1965which provides poor households with a range of services including schoolbased early education

A RedRed Rose
Robert Burns
Omy love is like a redred rose
That is newly sprung in June
Omy love is like the melody
That is sweetly played in tune
As fair are youmy lovely lass
So deep in love am I
And I will love you stillmy Dear
Till all the seas go dry
Till all the seas go drymy Dear
And the rocks melt with the sun
O I will love you stillmy Dear
While the sands of life shall run
And fare you wellmy only Love
And fare you well a while
And I will come againmy Love
Although it were ten thousand mile
