Healthy knees aren't the main consideration in choosing high heels but new research says chunky heels are just as bad for the knees as spindly stilettos(细高鞋).It takes a long time to feel the effects of knee osteoarthritis(骨关节炎)—and once you do it it is too late said Dr Casey Kerrigan leading researcher of the study and associate professor at Harvard Medical School's department of physical medicineI compare it to smoking—one cigarette is not painful but over a lifetime it is Wideheeled shoes feel comfortable so women wear them all day long Kerrigan saidThey are better for your feet than stiletto heels but just as bad for your knees
In the study researchers had twenty women wear two pairs of shoes with three inch heels one with a narrow heel and the other with a thick one The scientists compared how much pressure was put on the women's knees by both types of shoes The women also walked barefoot to test normal pressure The scientists found that both types of shoes applied equal amounts of pressure to the knees Compared with walking barefoot the heels increased pressure on the inside of the knee by 26 percent Increased pressure on the knee eventually leads to arthritis experts say
The idea that high heels are bad for your health isn't new—scientists have warned women for years that they contribute to problems ranging from corns to hammer toes tendonitis knee pain sprained(扭伤)ankles and back problems But in 1998Kerrigan and a team of Harvard researchers were the first to link high heels and knee osteoarthritis a painful joint disease that destroys cartilage(软骨) surrounding the knee The first study looked only at stiletto heels and Kerrigan said she wanted to study the chunky highheeled shoes she noticed many women wearing This study confirms what we all intuitively(直觉)know that highheeled shoes of any kind are not good for our health said DrGlem Pfeffer a San Francisco doctor and member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons who was not connected to the study

Tens of thousands of theatre tickets will be given away to young people next year as part of a government campaign to inspire a lifelong love for theatre
The plan to offer free seats to people aged between 18 to 26 — funded with £25 million of taxpayers' money — was announced yesterday by Andy Burnham the Culture Secretary It received a cautious welcome from some in the arts world who expressed concern that the tickets may not reach the most poor
One theatre source criticized the government's priorities(优先考虑事) in funding free tickets when the poor were struggling to buy food and fuel saying I don't know why the government's wasting money on this The Yong Vic as The Times reported today offers excellent performances at cheap prices
There was praise for the government's plan from Dominic Cooke of the Royal Court Theatre who said I support any move to get young people into theatre and especially one that aims to do it all over England not just in London
Ninetyfive publicly funded theatres could apply for funding under the twoyear plan In return they will offer free tickets on at least one day each week to 18 to 26 years old firstcome firstserved It is likely to be on Mondays traditionally a quiet night for the theatre
Mr Burnham said A young person attending the theatre can find it an exciting experience and be inspired to explore a new world But sometimes people miss out on it because they fear it's not for them’ It's time to change this perception
Jeremy Hunt the Shadow Culture Secretary said The real issue is not getting enthusiastic children into the theatre but improving art education so that more young people want to go in the first place For too many children theatres are a nogo area
24.Critics of the plan argued that ________

When Andrea Peterson landed her first teaching job she faced the daunting task of creating a music program with almost no money for equipment or supplies in a climate where standardsbased learning was the focus and music just provided a break for students and teachers
For her drive and creativity in overcoming those challenges she's been named national teacher of the year

As national teacher of the year Peterson will spend the more years outside the classroom as a national and international spokeswoman for education

When you go out try to use public transport If you close the bathroom door when you take a bath you will keep the room warmer Your bath water’s heat stays trapped in the bathroom The water also stays hotter and longer so you don’t need to add more hot water Save energy Close the door

Sure it's good to get along with your teacher because it makes the time you spend in the classroom more pleasant And yes it's good to get along with your teacher because in general it's smart to learn how to relate to the different kinds of people you'll meet throughout your life
But really there's one superimportant reason why you should get along with your teacher When you do learning bursts right open says Evelyn Vuko a longtime teacher who writes an education column called Teacher Says for the Washington Post newspaper
In fact kids who get along with their teachers not only learn more but they're more comfortable asking questions and getting extra help This makes it easier to understand new material and do your best on tests When you have this kind of relationship with a teacher he or she can be someone to turn to with problems such as problems with learning or school matters such as bullying (欺凌弱者)
As a kid in a primary or middle school you're at a wonderful period in your life You're like a sponge (海绵) able to soak up lots of new and exciting information On top of that you're able to think about all this information in new ways Your teacher knows that and in most cases is very excited to be the person who's giving you all that material and helping you put it together Remember teachers are people too and they feel great if you're open to what they're teaching you That's why they wanted to be teachers in the first placeto teach
Some kids may be able to learn in any situation whether they like the teacher or not But most kids are sensitive (敏感) to the way they get along with the teacher and if things aren't going well they won't learn as well and won't enjoy being in class
28What does the writer mainly talk about in the passage ________
A How to get a long well with teachers

C If you are getting on well with your teachers you have more problems than others
D If you do your best on tests you can build a good relationship with teachers

What does that mean for the world of technology Ewaste is one of the planet's biggest contributing waste problems
Not only ewaste but the materials that go into tech products are part of the problem Take the smartphone industry for example dozens of metals minerals which have to be taken from the earth (including 16 of 17 rare metals) go into making phones And with demand for mobile phones bigger than ever it's a problem that needs to be solved

She couldn't be an artist but she could become a lawyer for artists I knew I'd go to a law school and I'd try to help musicians because even if I didn't have my own voice I could help them find theirs said Rebecca 19 There hasn’t been a day when I've questioned my choice
That seems to be the case with hundreds of students who have signed up for entertainment law courses at Harvard Law School (HLS) over the last 20 years It marks a trend among law students to change from the traditional field of corporate law and look to Working in creative industries The trend also noticeable at other law schools around the country has pushed growth in the field of entertainment law
These students are propelled by a love for music the arts and show business It's an exciting career for a music lover said HLS Clinical Professor of Law Brian Price who's in charge of the Entertainment Law Clinic
Price added Although entertainment lawyers work behind the scenes they can have a bigger influence on artists' careers than managers They review artists’ agreements deals and contacts making sure their customers interests are protected
Artists are becoming wise and want to be involved in the business aspects of their careers said Price When they ask for legal advice they want to know their legal rights and how to make good deals and find ways to make more money Most HLS graduates end up working in business or corporate law though some have had successful careers in the entertainment industry Among them are Bruce Ramer 58 who represents customers like George Clooney and Clint East wood Bert Fields 52 who represents Michael Jackson

Who cares if people think wrongly that the Internet has had more important influences than the washing machine Why does it matter that people are more impressed by the most recent changes
It would not matter if these misjudgments were just a matter of people’s opinions However they have real impacts as they result in misguided use of scarce resources
The fascination with the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) revolution represented by the Internet has made some rich countries wrongly conclude that making things is so yesterday that they should try to live on ideas This belief in postindustrial society has led those countries to neglect their manufacturing sector(制造业) with negative consequences for their economies
Even more worryingly the fascination with the Internet by people in rich countries has moved the international community to worry about the digital divide between the rich countries and the poor countries This has led companies and individuals to donate money to developing countries to buy computer equipment and Internet facilities The question however is whether this is what the developing countries need the most Perhaps giving money for those less fashionable things such as digging wells extending electricity networks and making more affordable washing machines would have improved people’s lives more than giving every child a laptop computer or setting up Internet centres in rural villages I am not saying that those things are necessarily more important but many donators have rushed into fancy programmes without carefully assessing the relative longterm costs and benefits of alternative uses of their money
In yet another example a fascination with the new has led people to believe that the recent changes in the technologies of communications and transportation are so revolutionary that now we live in a borderless world As a result in the last twenty years or so many people have come to believe that whatever change is happening today is the result of great technological progress going against which will be like trying to turn the clock back Believing in such a world many governments have put an end to some of the very necessary regulations on crossborder flows of capital labour and goods with poor results
Understanding technological trends is very important for correctly designing economic policies both at the national and the international levels and for making the right career choices at the individual level However our fascination with the latest and our under valuation of what has already become common can and has led us in all sorts of wrong directions
17 Misjudgments on the influences of new technology can lead to
A a lack of confidence in technology
B a slow progress in technology
C a conflict of public opinions
D a waste of limited resources
18 The example in Paragraph 4 suggests that donators should
A take people’s essential needs into account
B make their programmes attractive to people
C ensure that each child gets financial support
D provide more affordable Internet facilities
19 What has led many governments to remove necessary regulations
A Neglecting the impacts of technological advances
B Believing that the world has become borderless
C Ignoring the power of economic development
D Overemphasizing the role of international communication
20 What can we learn from the passage
A People should be encouraged to make more donations
B Traditional technology still has a place nowadays

At the age of sevenwhile his friends were spending their pocket money on things like candy and toys Jose Adolfo Quisocola was busy saving money for basic purchases To try to get his peers (龄) to do the same the boy from Peru came up with the idea of an eco﹣bank the Bartselana Student Bank which allows kids of all ages to become financially independent while also helping the environment.
Set up in 2012 the bank is the world's first bank for kids To become a member a kid has to bring in at least 5 kilograms of solid waste and set a savings goal Once accepted all bank partners are required to deposit at least one additional kilogram of recyclables on a monthly basis and observe other requirements such as attending financial education and environmental management workshops.
The waste accumulated is sold to local recycling companies which thanks to Jose's efforts pay a higher﹣than﹣market rate for everything brought in by the bank members The money received is placed in the personal account where they collect until the savings goal is reached The account holder can then withdraw the money or choose to leave it and make it continue to grow for a bigger target At the beginning my teachers thought I was crazy or that a child could not undertake this type of project Jose recalls They did not understand that we are not the future of the country but its present Luckily I had the support of the school headmaster and an assistant in my class.
The boy's efforts paid off and by 2013 the bank had over 200 members who brought in one ton of recyclable waste Today the eco﹣bank which now has the support of several local institutions boasts ten educational centers They are designed to teach over 3000 students aged 10 to 18 to become financially independent use their money wisely and help the environment.
Not surprisingly Jose's efforts have earned him several national and international awards On November 20 2018 Jose won Children's Climate Prize which comes with a medal and 5500 in prize money and is given to a child or youth who has accomplished an extraordinary achievement for the climate or environment.

People are more similar than you think most of the time We grow up in such a large world with so much information everywhere and sometimes we can be misled into thinking something that we should not believe We have had the opportunity to make up our own minds So be kind you don’t know where people come from and what their story is
