The novel lives on the background of the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865 It is a book that tells us a story about the transition of a girl from a carefree playful princess to a hard physical labor and finally back to a prosperous lady
I started reading just because I had already watched the film adapted from it The film is wonderful especially when the heroine was taken responsibility by Vivien Leigh And just as what I had foreseed I got stuck into the first few pages
There are four main characters in the novel Scarlett O’Hara a spoilt society beauty with bristling black eyelashes which she uses to charm men Rhett Butler a terribly rich smuggler who is always vain but got a crash in Scarlett Melanie Hamilton a generous well respected and sensible girl who is despised by Scarlett And Ashley Wilkes a good guy respected throughout the neighbourhood and was Scarlett’s beloved one for many years
It starts when Scarlett was flirting with the handsome but stupid Tarleton twins on the porch of Tara and complaining about the negative effects that the war had brought to them Not for anything else just because it ruins her capacity to have fun attend parties and have beaux It really shows that Scarlett O’Hara is a spoilt selfish beauty with enormous power to manipulate men and a desire for the good things in life Knowing this you can see why she makes some of her seemingly ridiculous choices throughout the novel
Throughout the novel Scarlett keeps making some selfdestroying decisions such as marrying Charles Hamilton Melanie’s brotherbecause Ashley dared to marry Melanie She then quickly finds that married life isn’t what it’s seems to be for she can nolonger flirt to whoever she likes Matters are made even worse when Charles dies at war and Scarlett is pregnant with her first child You can imagine that years of widowhood wearing black and no dancing is really terrible to Scarlett However Scarlett is not one to be held down for long and she quickly returns to the dancing pools wearing brightly colored clothing while still in mourning
Then Scarlett shows surprising internal fortitude and strength when the guns of war come closer She takes care of Melanie’s baby and takes on the responsibility of managing Tara She proves to be a resourceful businesswoman who can make difficult decisions when they are needed
I can’t help to like Scarlett so does Rhett She’s hopelessly ambitious selfish vain and manipulative but she’s also an extremely strong firm and lively character She will do and say as what she exactly thinks is right regardless of the impact on other people There are uncountable times in the novel when I find myself thinking no Don’t do that but then the truth is that she’s going to do it anyway Rhett Butler is the perfect person to understand her though frustrating to Scarlett He proves to be the only man who can help her at certain circumstances
The novel is really dramatic and exactly not a comedy At the end of the novel Scarlett lost (or maybe not I hope so) the one whom she loves most and let us to enjoy her motto that famous around the world tomorrow is another day
