It's just a small white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree It has been there for the past 10 years or so It all began because my husband Mike hated Christmas—the commercial aspects of Christmas—overspending Knowing he felt this way I decided one year to avoid the usual presents The idea came in an unusual way
Our son Kevin who was 12 that year was wrestling at the junior level at the school he attended and shortly before Christmas there was a match against a team sponsored by a church These youngsters dressed in ragged clothes presented a sharp contrast to our boys in their beautiful dresses and shoes As the match began I was alarmed to see that the other team was wrestling without headgear a kind of light helmet designed to protect a wrestler's ears It was a luxury that the poor team obviously could not afford Well we ended up defeating them Mike seated beside me shook his head sadly I wish just one of them could have won he said They have a lot of potential but losing like this could take the heart right out of them That's when the idea for his present came That afternoon I went to a local sporting goods store and bought wrestling headgear and shoes for the youngsters and sent them anonymously(匿名) to the church On Christmas Eve I placed the envelope on the tree the note inside telling Mike what I had done and that this was his gift from me His smile was the brightest thing about Christmas that year and in the following years
For each Christmas I followed the tradition The envelope became the highlight of our Christmas It was always the last thing opened on Christmas morning and our children ignoring their new toys would stand with wideeyed expectation as their dad lifted the envelope from the tree to show its contents As the children grew they joined
May we all remember the reason for Christmas and the true Christmas spirit this year and always God bless—pass this along to your friends and loved ones

Holi(胡里节) is one of the major festivals of India It's a festival of colours celebrated in the late February or early March every year to mark the end of winter and the beginning of the spring season

For bonfires children search the neighbourhood for waste wood At night they pile up the wood and light fire in it

Facial expressions carry meaning that is determined by situations and relationships For example in American culturethe smile is in general an expression of pleasure Yet it also has other uses A woman's smile at a police officer does not carry the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child A smile may show love or politeness It can also hide true feelings It often causes confusion across cultures For example many people in Russia consider smiling at strangers in public to be unusual and even improper Yet many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places (although this is less common in big cities) Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places some Americans believe that Russians don't smile enough In Southeast Asian cultures a smile is frequently used to cover painful feelings Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile
Our faces show emotions but we should not attempt to read people from another culture as we would read someone from our own culture The fact that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as do members of another does not mean that they do not experience emotions Rather there are cultural differences in the amount of facial expressiveness permitted For example in public and in formal situations many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do When with friends Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly
It is difficult to generalize about Americans and facial expressiveness because of personal and cultural differences in the United States People from certain cultural backgrounds in the United States seem to be more facially expressive than others The key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different If we judge according to our own cultural habits we may make the mistake of reading the other person incorrectly
8 What does the smile usually mean in the US
A Love B Politeness C Joy D Thankfulness
9 The author mentions the smile of the Vietnamese to prove that a smile can
A show friendliness to strangers
B be used to hide true feelings
C be used in the wrong places
D show personal habits
10 What should we do before attempting to read people
A Learn about their relations with others
B Understand their cultural backgrounds
C Find out about their past experience
D Figure out what they will do next
11 What would be the best title for the text
A Cultural Differences B Smiles and Relationships
C Facial Expressiveness D Habits and Emotions
12 The underlined word it in Paragraph 1 refers to
A a facial expression B American culture
C smile D pleasure

Nowadays many foreigners marry Chinese 1 But there are also massive advantages to having a Chinese spouse(配偶) in China I married my girlfriend of four years in May 2014 and I definitely feel that my life in China would have been much worse without her Here I'll tell you why I feel this way
2 The language barrier is a great obstacle for the majority of foreigners living in China and a bilingual Chinese spouse is a huge help in overcoming that obstacle Not only can your spouse help with interpretation but they will have access to information that is only in Chinese such as job advertisements housing advertisements and Internet shopping sites 3 My wife was very effective in finding students for me as she could read posts on local Internet forums that I cannot and sometimes even advertise on my behalf
Your spouse can also offer a unique insight into the mindset of Chinese people They can pick up on subtle hints indicated by body language and verbal cues that a foreigner may never be able to 4 As a result I avoid many cultural misunderstandings
5 The family unit is highly respected in China Older generations rely on their children for support in their old age and most Chinese feel that family and marriage provide a solid support network that can always be relied upon Therefore a foreigner with a Chinese spouse doesn't find himherself seen as a temporary worker who is just passing through I have personally found that when my wife and I are together I am treated with a bit more respect
A Firstly you can overcome the language barrier
B I used to work as a salesman
C You can become part of a collective whole
D Crosscultural relationships can be hugely challenging
E They act as a key bridge between cultures with vastly different styles of communication
F How do I get along with my wife's parents
G I used to work as a private teacher
