12. Because bats only fly at night and live in tombs, caves, and abandoned churches and buildings, they are believed to be omens of evil. They are commonly associated with witches and vampires. It is superstition that witches and vampires can take the form of a bat. 21. Trick or treating不给糖就捣蛋的游戏起源于要灵魂饼干的习俗，所谓的灵魂饼干就是将烤好的饼干祭祀过世的人。后来，基督教会鼓励贫穷的人在收获的季节里挨家挨户地乞求食物，若是得到食物，这些穷人就会帮这家庭中过世的人祈祷以谢谢他们。

24. Pumpkin Carving南瓜灯源于古代爱尔兰。传说一个名叫JACK的人，是个醉汉且爱恶作剧。一天JACK把恶魔骗上了树，随即在树桩上刻了个十字，恐吓恶魔令他不敢下来，然后JACK就与恶魔约法三章，让恶魔答应施法让JACK永远不会犯罪为条件让他下树。JACK死后，其灵魂却既不能上天堂又不能下地狱，于是他的亡灵只好靠一根小蜡烛照着指引他在天地之间倘佯。
25. 在古老的爱尔兰传说里，这根小蜡烛是在一根挖空的萝卜里放着，称作“JACK LANTERNS”，而古老的萝卜灯演变到今天，则是南瓜做的了。据说爱尔兰人到了美国不久，即发现南瓜不论从来源和雕刻来说都比萝卜胜一筹，于是南瓜就成了万圣节的宠物。
