(9)Unit 1 The mass media 高二英语牛津译林版 寒假作业(含答案)

    (9)Unit 1 The mass media
    阅读理解
1    Have you ever noticed a character on a TV show or in a movie drinking your favorite brand of cola or driving your favorite type of sports car This is called product placement or PPL for short and it is a form of advertising in which a product is inserted (插入) into the scene of a movie or a TV program PPL has increased greatly in recent years and has become some companies' favorite method of advertising their products If you saw the movie SpiderMan you might have noticed ads for Samsung Electronics Toyota cars and Dr Pepper soda
Companies love the convenience of PPL there are no commercials to make models to hire nor concepts to dream up By featuring their product in a popular TV show or movie that product is naturally connected with an appealing character in a comfortable setting Take one of the main characters on Friends for example Think about Rachel in a fine Ralph Lauren suit working at a Ralph Lauren store in New York City And entertainment producers have a crush on the money PPL brings in—in fact the entire production budget for some movies is sometimes paid by the films' PPL advertisers
However there is increasing objection to the growing PPL trend Critics say obvious PPL in movies or TV shows destroys viewers' ability to escape into the fantasy world on the screen Directors and writers hate having to include a product in a scene mining the writing and aesthetic (美学) quality of the piece And consumer groups warn that kids cannot discern (觉察出) PPL When for example a child sees his favorite character wiping her lips with a Kleenex after drinking CocaCola it is likely that the child would falsely think that Kleenex and Coca Cola are the general terms for all similar products This suggests that PPL can be a powerfully subconscious tool that encourages kids to develop preferences for certain brands
Regardless of how critics feel about it there is little doubt that PPL will continue to play a significant part in entertainment for the foreseeable future
1PPL is a type of ad that ______
A enables businesses to develop fast
B helps people get to know the latest trend
C places a product in a movie or a TV show
D uses characters related to a movie or a TV show
2What does the underlined part have a crush on mean
    A Receive B Appreciate C Dislike D Waste
3Why do consumer groups object to PPL
A It prevents viewers escaping from the real world
B It can cause children to prefer certain brands easily
C It destroys the artistic beauty of the show or the movie
D It creates negative connections between products and movies
4 What's the author's attitude towards the growing PPL trend
    A Positive B Doubtful C Cautious D Unconcerned
2    Advertising can be defined as a paid form of nonprofessional but encouraging and positively favorable presentation of goods and services to a group of people by a sponsor In the simplest words advertising is an introduction to consumers and the general public of services and goods
No company can guarantee to make a profit on any product unless it advertises first Advertising creates brand awareness in the general public and makes business more popular within the circle of potential (潜) buyers
There are three types of media print broadcast and direct media The first category consists of printed information sources — newspapers and magazines which are relatively cheap Nearly everybody reads newspapers Moreover newspapers are generally local which allows small local businesses to advertise directly to their potential customers But most of the ads in newspapers have no color and are not that appealing Instead you find opposite ads in the second type of print medium magazines
For the advertiser the greatest advantage of magazines is that they have specialized groups of readers For example the people who read Car and Driver are probably not the same people who read Glamour which is a women's magazine Therefore advertising in a magazine allows a business to direct its ads to the people who are most interested in the product
The second category is the broadcast media Almost everybody listens to the radio which is usually local However the radio is a background medium and most listeners are doing something else while listening Because radio listeners exist over many stations a company may have to advertise at the same time on several stations to reach target audience
Millions of dollars are spent each year on radio ads but more millions on television advertising Of all the media TV with sound sights and motion is the most dramatic How many of you for instance can sing the slogan for CocaCola That's because TV permits ads to reach large numbers of people on a national or regional level in a short period of time
Mail which costs little is one of the direct media Mail advertising messages are targeted on those most likely to buy the product or service But unfortunately many are viewed as junk mail Billboards which you see when you're driving down the street are useful because they are colorful and easy to see and short enough for drivers to read as they are passing by Signs and posters appearing in the places where the product is being sold such as supermarkets are other direct media
1According to the passage why do companies advertise
A Because advertisements are nonprofessional but encouraging
B Because companies will not make any profit if they don't advertise
C Because ads make companies well recognized and business profitable
D Because advertising is an introduction to consumers and the general public
2The underlined part opposite ads in Paragraph 3 refers to ______
    A ads in magazines
    B ads in newspapers
C ads which are colorful and appealing
D ads which have no color and are not appealing
3For a small local company to advertise which of the following is it least likely to choose
    A Newspapers B Radios C Magazines D Mail
3    On Monday about 270 pilot whales got into difficulty on a sandbank at Macquarie Heads near Strahan on Tasmania's west coast Another 200 whales were found on Wednesday making it Tasmania's largest recorded stranding event The Department of Primary Industries Parks Water and Environment (DPIPWE) said that about a third had died
Marine biologists arrived in the area to carry out rescue operations They planned to use specialized equipment such as special tarpaulins (防水油布) to push the whales back into the deep water The local police also assisted in the rescue
The whales that were stranded are pilot whales and they are found in almost all the oceans of the world Pilot whales are in fact one of the largest members of the dolphin family but they are treated as whales They were named pilot whales because it was thought that each pod followed a 'pilot' in the group
Whale stranding commonly known as beaching is a phenomenon in which whales and dolphins strand themselves on land usually on a beach Several explanations for why whales strand themselves have been proposed including changes in water temperatures unusual features of whales' echolocation in certain surroundings but none have so far been universally accepted as a definitive reason for the behavior
In recent years whale stranding has become more frequent around the world It was reported that in November 2018 a dead sperm whale that was washed ashore in eastern Indonesia had consumed a horrifying collection of plastic trash including 115 drinking cups 25 plastic bags plastic bottles two slippers and a bag containing more than 1000 pieces of string In all the plastic contents of the whale's stomach weighed around six kilograms The bags are black due to a reaction with the creature's stomach acids according to Thai Whales Group A study has shown that a person on average breathes or swallows at least 74000 microscopic particles of plastic each year
1How many whales died according to DPIPWE
    AAbout 160 BAbout 200 CAbout 270 DAbout 470
2What does the underlined word stranding mean in Paragraph 1
ABeing put in danger BBeing found extinct
CBeing trapped in trouble DBeing left or driven ashore
3What does the author want to tell us by the numbers in Paragraph 5
AWhales mistake plastics for food BWhales need the ability of selfprotection
CWhales' living conditions are worsening DWhales have an excellent digestive system
4What will be discussed probably following the last paragraph
AProtective measures for whales BThe reasons for whale stranding
CStudying whales' stomach deeply DResearching the oceans' ecosystem
4    Recently I read Nineteen EightyFour a novel by George Orwell set in a state where even the language people use is controlled Adjectives are forbidden and instead they use phrases such as ungood plus good and doubleplus good to express emotions As I first read this I thought how impossible it would be in our society to have such vocabulary However the more I thought about it the more I realised in its own way it's already happening I send messages to my friends and alongside each is the emoji I often use the emojis to emphasise something or to keep the tone from being too serious because they convey my emotions much better than I ever could using just words And I wonder with our excessive use of emojis are we losing the beauty and diversity of our vocabulary
English has large vocabulary which is widely used in the world but who's to say what it'll be like in the future Perhaps we will have a shorter language using abbreviations(缩写词) like LOL(laugh out loud) or BRB (be right back) instead of saying the full phrases So does this mean our vocabulary will shrink Is it the start of an exciting new era Will people look back on us in the future and say this is where it all began — the new language Or is this a classic case of the older generations' saying Things weren't like that when I was younger We didn't use emojis to show our emotions
Yet when you look back the power of image has always been there Even in the prehistoric era they used imagery to communicate and what's even more incredible is that we are able to analyse those drawings and understand the meaning of them thousands of years later Pictures have the ability to transcend time and language Images be it cave paintings or emojis allow us to convey a message that's not restrictive but rather universal
1Why does the author mention Nineteen EightyFour
ATo show his interest BTo introduce the topic
CTo provide an example DTo describe a phenomenon
2Why does the author like using emojis
    ATo save time of typing
    BTo make fun of friends
CTo reduce the use of words
    DTo express naturally and casually
3Which word can best replace the underlined word shrink in Para 2
    ADisappear BDecline CIncrease DChange
4What will the author agree with
AEmojis will not restrict our communication
BEmojis will destroy the variety of vocabulary
CEmojis are useless and meaningless in the future
DEmojis will replace English as the most popular language

At first it didn't seem as if the two of us were a good match Sam hardly looked at me he barely spoke or smiled I tried everything to engage his attention Nothing worked Week after week I'd drive for 30 minutes to the school only to sit with a little boy who didn't seem to care whether I was there or not I was so frustrated (受挫)
One day I noticed Sam wearing an Iron Man shirt The next week I brought a board game (棋盘游戏) featuring Iron Man characters When I opened the box he was attracted He joined me and played the game with me As I was leaving that day he looked up at me and said See you next week
He and I built our relationship from there I would spend my Friday lunch period with him talking playing games and just being a friend Little by little he opened up to me about his home life His dad wasn't around His mother supported the family by working nights at a local factory so Sam's older sibling took care of him most of the time
Right then and there I wished to make sure the two of us always kept in touch—even after the program ended Now it would be our last Friday lunch together How could I make sure we had a great meal and he would still remember me
