Once Minh was in a grocery store He saw an old man and an old woman They wanted a box of cereal The box was on a high shelf They couldn’t reach it Minh saw a stepladder He got on the ladder and got the box He handed it to the elderly couple They thanked him
Where are your children asked Minh Why don’t they help you buy food
Our children have their own lives they said We like to be free to do as we like Minh doesn’t think this is right In his country children help their parents Minh gave the elderly couple his phone number He told them to call him if they needed help One night they asked Minh to dinner but they never asked him for help
One day Minh was walking with a Vietnamese friend The two were going to a film
Minh wanted to go to a restaurant first Minh took his friend’s hand He pulled him toward the restaurant People on the street stared at Minh In Vietnam friends often hold hands Minh found out that people in America are not used to men holding hands
Minh Pham is going through a process known as resocialization Socialization is the process through which a person learns to live in a society Everyone goes through this process Minh went through it when he lived in Vietnam But the Vietnamese way of life is much different from the American way of life When Minh came to America he had to learn a new way of life He had to learn how to live in a new society

B get used to the local weather and climate
C communicate with foreign people there
D avoid culture shock and get used to a new life
    Passage 3
As we consider what makes one man better than the other let’s look at two examples The first example is a man who has a good job a healthy body and a loving family His success is due to good decisions He chose the correct subjects to study when he was at the university Now that he’s out of school he always schedules his time well so that he can get everything done at the proper time He exercises and eats well as he understands the benefits of this In addition in order to achieve happiness in the home he spends time with his family and makes sure they all have when they need On the other hand the second man is something less than the successful person the first man is What’s wrong with him
Good sense is the ability to know what is true or right from what is not true or wrong And some people might think that the second lacks good sense However the person who thinks this is mistaken Actually since everyone has the same amount of good sense the first man does not have an advantage over the second in this respect The second man has a good mind and he has the ability to judge things well
The second man runs into trouble because he directs his thought along a different path
He considers other things different from the first man The problem is that he does not apply his mind rightly as does the first one Thus he is not capable of advancing further than he does
When you consider what you want out of life think about the results of your decisions Apply your mind well so that good things will come about and so that you are not left regretting your actions
21 During his university years the first man ________
A scheduled his time to get everything done B learned how to apply his mind rightly
C ate right and did exercise regularly D chose things that made him successful later
22 The first man is fully aware of the good things that will result from _______
A making good decisions during one’s university studies
B scheduling his time so that he can get everything done
C taking care of his body with diet and exercise
D being a successful person with a good family life
23 One’s ability to judge right or wrong is called _______
A beneficial consideration B thought direction
C successful thinking D good sense
24 To keep from wishing you made a different choice you should ________
A get more out of life B develop more good sense
C judge things right or wrong D put good thought into your actions
25 The main topic of this passage is ________
A people are equal B applying thought well will help
C some people are not successful D people must judge things well
    Passage 4
What you give your relatives friends husband or wife can help you know yourself better Also what they give you can tell you something about their personality Most giftgiving (and getting) shows nothing more than the spirit of love and friendship But it is possible to form some associations between the kinds of things bought and the people who buy them Here is a guide to who gives what and why
The clothes you wear tell something about your personality They tell the world not only know you want to be seen but how you see yourself as well When someone gives you something to wear that agrees with your selfimage they’re saying I agree with you I like you the way you are Such a gift should be taken as a form of compliment On the other hand a gift of clothing that does not match your personality could be an insult to your character
Making something by hand has become the exception in many countries today so much so that giving a homemade gift is sometimes considered unusual If you receive a homemade gift you’re lucky It may not be made perfectly but it will show a certain quality of love People who give homemade gifts may be said to be very generous They’ve given time and emotion two important characteristics of being creative
A person who thinks of food when thinking of a gift is a good example of what human warmth means Whether you give a box of chocolate a bag of oranges or a ball of cheese all
carry the same message of comfort and support
People who give books as gifts either like reading or would like everyone to think they do If you happen to receive a large heavy book its giver may be much more interested in the way things appear than in the way they actually are Of course reading is a way of feeling the emotions of another person and of learning new things The giver is probably trying to say to you what the book said to him
26 The first paragraph is written mainly to tell readers that ______
A gifts you give can help you understand yourself better
B gifts should be given when you know a person’s personality
C gifts can show friendship and love between the giver and receiver
D gifts can tell you something about the person who gives them
27 A person who likes the selfimage of another person will give the latter ________
A beautiful clothes to compliment the receiver
B a gift that was made at home by the giver
C a gift that agrees with the personality of the receiver
D a gift that matches the character of the giver
28 People are especially generous if they give _______
A a thing not found in one’s country B an object that shows warmth
C something unusual D gifts made by hand
29 What kind of message is communicated by a gift of food
    A A supportive one B A generous one C A creative one D An unusual one
30 If you give a large book as a gift rather than a small one it may show that ________
A you enjoy reading very much and want the receiver to enjoy it too
B the receiver is interested in reading a large book of that sort
C you want to share with others a certain feeling or newly learned meaning
D you are more interested in the appearance of the book than in its contents
    III Cloze (1’×20=20’)
You probably don’t have children but maybe you’ve thought about how children are brought up It is interesting to notice that children so often_31_ their parents’ ideas They do this 32 at the same time keeping their parents’ characteristics That is to say children grow up to have different opinions 33 their parents And yet they may have 34 personalities to their parents There is a 35 going on in the toy world at present People question whether children should be 36 to have war toys My 37 is that the toys should not be pushed onto them Even so I don’t see any 38 in not allowing them to have war toys It is the 39 of my friend Henry that makes me think so Henry is the son of strict parents His parents are totally 40 to war They hate war so much in fact that they never allowed Henry to have toy soldiers or guns 41 a boy
Henry grew up and 42 the army He became a firstclass soldier 43 all sorts of honors He became the opposite in every way from what his parents might have expected 44 their son And yet there is a 45 about Henry which shows a peaceful personality There is a sympathetic element about the man 46 I can see must have come from his family Although he does things 47 from his parents a lot of spirit gets passed on
Parents have to 48 their children what they believe to be right Still it is not necessary that children 49 their parents’ example exactly Perhaps the best way a parent can teach a child to be gentle is for the parent to be gentle in his own everyday life 50 than not allowing toy guns At least that’s what I think
