Lucky enters to win. I enter to get out of peeling potatoes for our Thanksgiving dinner at home. The program this year took place last week as usual. Everything went along well in the morning. Lucky made a Mayflower and I made a Turkey. However, when we got back after lunch, something unexpected happened. The mainsail of his Mayflower was lying on the table in a puddle of water. I glanced at my Turkey I had made. It had barely begun to melt! “What happened?” I asked. “Did you bump the table when you left?” “No! I just have rotten luck,” he wailed(哀叹), for the rest of the ship he had made began to melt too. “This can’t be just a case of bad luck,” I said, looking around for something that could have caused the destruction. “Something must have happened,” I said. Lucky’s eyes widened. “You think someone did this on purpose?” I shrugged. “Maybe. It makes more sense than bad luck.” Lucky peered around the room. “Hey,” he whispered. “That kid never left the room for the snack break. Maybe he smashed my Mayflower!” I frowned. “I don’t know, Lucky. He doesn’t really seem the type.” “Haven’t you heard the saying ‘Looks can be deceiving’?” Lucky said, his voice rising. “He probably broke my ship while everyone was gone!” I stared at the ruined Mayflower and shook my head. “It doesn’t look broken, though. It looks more…disintegrated(使分解). Lucky, don’t jump to any--” “I’m telling on that kid!” Lucky interrupted. He charged off, his face as red as cranberry sauce. “...conclusions,” I said. With a sigh, I turned to the shipwreck and placed the melting mainsail back in its original spot. I held it there, thinking, until my fingers turned as cold as the ice. “Yeowch!” I said, dropping the mainsail and sticking my frozen fingers into my mouth. It was in that instant that the puzzle was solved. 21.Why does the writer take part in the “Ice Sculpting for Kids” program? A. He wants to beat Lucky to win the prize B. He hates to celebrate the Thanksgiving Day C. He wants to avoid working on Thanksgiving Day D. He wants to peel more potatoes for Thanksgiving Day 22.Why did Lucky rushed to tell on the kid? A. She was eight years old when her father brought home a manuscript for her to read. At the time, he was working for Bloomsbury Publishing. After reading the manuscript, Alice wrote a note to her father: “The excitement in this book made me feel warm inside,“ she wrote. “I think it is probably one of the best books an 8 or 9 year old could read.“ Based in part on Alice's comments, Bloomsbury went on to publish “Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.“ Alice's note to her father is part of the British Library's new exhibition, “Harry Potter: A History of Magic.“ It celebrates the 20th anniversary of the publication of J.K. Rowling's first book about Harry and his friends at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. When “Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone“ was released in 1997, Bloomsbury sent just 500 copies to stores in Britain and another 500 copies to British libraries. Now, Harry and his friends are known worldwide. The exhibit at the British Library in February includes Rowling's outline for her books, her artwork of its characters and a map of the Hogwarts School. It also includes early versions of Rowling's books that were rejected by other publishers. The show has two rooms. They are divided up based on the subjects offered at Hogwarts. Areas include Potions, Herbology, Care of Magical Creatures and Defense Against the Dark Arts. Each area describes the stories and beliefs that Rowling included in her books. Included in the exhibition are discussions of alchemy, the European traditions that led to modern chemistry, and the Ripley Scroll--a six-meter-long document from the 1500s. It describes how to make a Philosopher's Stone. The British Library has already sold about 30,000 tickets to the exhibit—the most advance tickets ever sold for a British Library exhibition. The show closes on February 28, 2018. It will then travel to New York for the 20th anniversary of the release of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone,“ the book's title in the United States. 25.Why does the writer mention Alice Newton at the beginning of the text? A. To prove the popularity of the following paragraphs B. To introduce the topic of the following paragraphs C. To remind readers to love books as Alice Newton does D. To encourage readers to read Harry Potter series more often 26.Which is NOT included in the British Library’s new exhibition, “Harry Potter: A History of Magic.”? A. Rowling’s outline for her books B. A map of the Hogwarts School C. Rowling’s early published books D. The very note to her father by Alice 27.Which of the following statements is true? A. Thanks to Alice and her father, Harry Potter series gained popularity B. As soon as the first Harry Potter was available, it became the best seller C. The exhibition of Harry Potter: A History of Magic will last two months in Britain D. The exhibition will include discussions about modern chemistry C Fitness bands like the Apple Watch and the Fitbit aim to track something like heart rate. But early models weren’t all that accurate. We thought of them a little bit like random number generators(生成器). They really didn’t seem to be providing anything that bore any relationship to heart rate. Euan Ashley, a cardiologist(心脏病专家), studies wearables at Stanford University. He and his colleagues have now tested seven newer fitness bands, from brands like Apple, Fitbit and others and he says those heart rate statistics have gotten much better. “Yeah we were pleasantly surprised actually by how good the accuracy of the heart rate monitoring was.“ For most of the devices, the error rate was less than 5%, which is good enough for your doctor. But where all the devices failed to measure up was estimating calories burned. Even the most accurate devices were off by 30%, compared to lab measurements of energy consumption. One device was off by more than 90%. If you think about going to the gym and working out for an hour and maybe that’s around 400 calories, then in reality that could be anything from 200 to 800. And that’s a big difference if you’re thinking about somebody who’s incorporating those estimates into their lifestyle and particular thinking about what to eat that evening based on the workout they did that afternoon. The results are in the Journal of Personalized Medicine. The reason for the discrepancy, Ashley says, could be that we all burn energy at different rates and that’s hard to calculate from simple input statistics like weight and height. Some people are incredibly efficient and look incredibly elegant when they run. And others really clearly look like they’re burning a lot more calories to cover the same amount of ground. So if you own a wearable, it’s probably safe to trust the heart data. But what it can’t tell you is whether your time on the treadmill(跑步机) really justifies that chocolate bar. 28.What does Euan Ashley say about the newer models of wearables? A. They were all useless B. They were hardly effective C. They were too expensive D. They were mostly accurate 29.What can we learn from Paragraph 4 and Paragraph 5? A. For measuring heart rates, most fitness bands are not reliable B. For measuring calories in exercise, most fitness bands are not reliable C. We can base our lifestyle and diet on advice from doctors D. We can base our lifestyle and diet on data from wearables 30.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To remind readers to use fitness bands wisely B. To promote the sale of popular wearables C. To discuss the advantages of some popular wearables D. To introduce some famous-brand fitness bands 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Cut Back on Playing Video Games As you get older and shoulder more responsibilities in your life, your gaming time might need to adjust. Here’s what worked well for me. Start Tracking Your Gaming Time One of the reasons why video games eat up so much time is that they’re so engaging. I can’t count how many times I’ve sat down to play games for “a couple of minutes” then looked up to see hours have gone by. Tracking your gaming time can help, says psychologist John M. Grohol. Prepare a spreadsheet or a piece of paper, and write down when you start playing a game and when you stop. 31 I found it helpful. Start Choose Games Wisely 32 . MMOs and RPGs, for example, are major time sinks. I would probably cry if I looked at my total time spent during the golden age of World of War-craft. If you’re having a hard time stepping away from these kinds of games because there’s so much to do in them, cut them out of your gaming diet. 33 . That way, you can play in short bursts. I still indulge in these kinds of games occasionally, but I don’t play as much as I used to. Figure Out What You’re Escaping Video games are a fun way to de-stress and also one of the most advanced forms of escapism out there. To reduce my gaming thirst I started looking at my escapism habits from another angle. 34 . Video games do offer a nice respite from the harsh truths of reality. More often than not, I would be able to identify the things that were stressing me out and making me want to escape to virtual worlds in the first place. If work was getting me down, I’d make a practical plan on how to improve it instead of grapping a controller. 35 . The real world doesn’t always offer that, but it never will if you always run from the issues in your life. A. Why not get away from the game you are crazy about? B. Shift your focus to games that are more pick-up-and-play. C. Then add up your total gaming time at end of each week. D. We find it hard to get rid ourselves of the addiction to games E. I asked myself “What am I hiding from?” and worked from there F. Some games require a much bigger time investment than other games G. We often run to video games because they make us feel powerful and in control 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选取可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 My wife and I separated in December. As she got into the car, she was immediately 42 to the heart, picking it up, 43 it and asking me what it was. “It’s a present from my therapist to help me through this difficult time 44 it is not for me to keep, but only to have till I get my own heart,” I 45 . He put an advertisement 56 a newspaper for a boy to work in his office. Out of nearly fifty people 57 came to apply, the man selected one and dismissed 58 others. “I would like to know,” said a friend, “the reason you preferred that boy, who brought neither a single letter, 59 a single recommendation.” “You are wrong,” said the gentlemen. “He had many. He wiped his feet at the door and closed the door behind him, 60 (mean) that he was careful. He gave his seat immediately to an old man, showing that he was kind and 61 (thought). He took off his cap when he came in and answered my questions quickly, showing that he was a polite gentleman. Everyone else steeped over the book that I 62 (put) on the floor purposely. He picked 63 up and placed it on the table, and he waited quietly for his turn instead of pushing and crowding. When I talked to him, I noticed his tidy clothing, his 64 (neat) brushed hair, and his clean finger mails. Can’t you see that these are excellent recommendations? I considered them to be more significant than 65 (letter).” Hearing the words, the friend nodded in agreement. 第四部分 写作(共两节,满分40分) 第一节 应用文写作(满分15分) 假定你是李华,在你班学习一个月的美国男孩Tom不太适应这里的生活,请给他写一封信,内容包括:1.安慰;2.提建议;3.邀请参加你的生日聚会。 注意: 1.词数80左右; 2.可适当增加细节,以使行文连贯。 第二节 读后续写(满分25分) 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。 A Simple Thank I have been in the teaching profession more than thirty years, and one of the best teachers I have ever known was Mr. Rowe. I was lucky enough to co-teach fourth grade with him. Mr. Rowe had infinite patience and understanding and I learned so much from watching him. He could perform miracles, like the one her performed with Steven, one of the unhappiest kids I ever saw. Steven couldn’t stand school. He didn’t like being picked last for kickball. He didn’t like the kids who raised their hands and knew all the answers, and most importantly, he didn’t like himself. The first day he walked into Mr. Rowe’s classroom, he ignored the other students, looking angry and annoyed, and slid into his chair, knocking a couple of textbook onto the floor. Mr. Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven’s shoulder, but Steven pulled away. Nevertheless, Mr. Rowe welcomed him: “Hi, Steven. I’m happy you are in my class. We are gonna have a great year.” Steven looked around the room as if Mr. Rowe must be mistaken. No teacher in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom. So, while Mr. Rowe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day of school, it seemed like Steven was angry and confused. That day after classes, Mr. Rowe chose Steven to pitch the kickball at recess. “Hey, Steven,” Mr. Rowe commented, “You are good at pitching. Let me show you my secret trick.” Mr. Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could perform. Steven learned fast and did quite well! Everyone cheered for him! After the kickball, Steven sat as closer to Mr. Rowe in classes as he could. When a question was asked, Steven lit up; he knew the answer! He raised his hands. When he answered the question, his voice shook. However, he got the answer right! He said, with Mr. Rowe , his days of the fourth grade promised wonderful. That is not to say that every day went smoothly, but it was evident that Steven grew to love Mr. Rowe more and more with each passing day. 注意: 1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 2.至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语; 3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好; 4.续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。 Paragraph 1: Time passed quickly that year, and before we all knew it, it was the last day of school. Paragraph 2: Many years later, Mr. Rowe and I were surprised when a handsome young man walked into our classroom, dressed in the Marine Corps(海军) uniform. 本文档由香当网(https://www.xiangdang.net)用户上传
